Saturday 4th July - France 3 - England 2

Craig celebrated his 24th birthday as he and the England team faced France in the European Blind Football Championships final on Saturday 4th July.  We're sad to report that our brave Lions lost 3 - 2 to the French in a thrilling encounter in front of thousands as the host nation claimed the title.  England led 2 - 1 until the last 5 minutes of the game when France struck an equalizer and the game looked set for extra time.  Shortly before the final whistle, the same French player scored again to gain the lead and despite an all out attacking response, England could not level.

Well done though England!   We're all very proud of you lads!

Friday 3rd July - Spain 2 - England 3

England sent out the big guns in the French heatwave to take on the reigning champions Spain.  In an epic battle between Europe's top two blind teams for a place in Saturday's final, England's defence cancelled out the Spanish attack and matched the tricky ball control skills of their opponents with an outstanding controlled passing game of their own to win the game  3 - 2 and claim a final appearance against the hosts France who followed up England's victory with a win against Greece in the other Euro semi final.

Wednesday 1st July - France 3 - England 1 Pics HERE

England have lost their first game of the tournament in France.  The Lions battled hard against their hosting counterparts, breaking through on numerous occasions only to miss the target at the end.  Having already qualified for a semi final on Friday, manager Tony Larkin changed the team around somewhat to give everyone a run out.  Craig got his first start and played the full game in the searing heat, suffering a head injury and finishing the game bandaged to stop the blood.  In his own words "there was no way I was comin' off unless they took me off"!  That's the spirit lad :)  The England doc sorted him out properly afterwards and it was off to the ice bath followed by a massage before being able to put the feet up.  The word from the coaching staff is that the team played really well despite the loss and are now preparing to focus on the big semi final on Friday against either Greece or the current European Champions Spain.

Tuesday 30th June - Italy 0 - England 2 Pics HERE

England beat Italy today in their second group game of the tournament in France.   The Lions secured a 2nd consecutive win to qualify for a semi final place on Friday. Craig got another taste of international action in the second half in the continued scorching heat in Nantes and was pleased to have kept a clean sheet. England and West Brom captain Dave Clarke scored his 4th of the tournament with Worcester's Keryn Seal adding the killer second to finish the "Italian Job"! Another great result for the boys and great confidence in the knowledge that qualification for a semi final has been secured prior to the last group game against France tomorrow.

Monday 29th June - England 4 - Germany 1 Pics HERE

England beat Germany 4 - 1 in their first group game of the tournament today. Craig got his first taste of international action in the second half in a scorching heat in Nantes. England and West Brom captain Dave Clarke bagged a hat-trick with Worcester's Keryn Seal adding one also, as England's superior fitness and passing game had the Germans chasing in the heat. Craig was introduced for the second half and slotted into the left back position well for his debut appearance. The Germans failed to muster a strong response other than a consolation goal from the penalty spot. A great start to the week for "The Lions" and spirits are high going into tomorrow's 2nd group match against Italy.

Sunday 28th June - The official opening ceremony started the day off in scorching weather, Craig reports, and was followed by the first group matches of the tournament with host nation France beating Italy, Russia beating Belarus and current European champions Spain comfortably beating Turkey. The England boys underwent some gentle training during the afternoon and retired early (10pm) in preparation for their first game against Germany at 9:30am Monday 29th.

Saturday 27th June - A gentle start to the day is planned for the squad after nearly a full day travelling yesterday. Craig reported that everyone was wiped out by the time they arrived around tea time yesterday so the boss is gonna go easy on training for a couple of hours this morning.  Craig is room sharing with team mate Keryn Seal, one of the experienced players with more than 25 England caps and is as much of a character as Craig is.

Friday 26th June - Up early this morning and dressed officially for a big send off from the gang at Hereford as the boys travel by coach to Birmingham for their flight to Paris at 11am. From Paris, the squad will travel to Nantes by coach again to arrive at their base for the next week. The team is getting quite a bit of attention at Birmingham and lots of support and messages of good luck. Great stuff!

Thursday 25th June - Final day of the build-up training and fitness is at its peak so mainly ball control, passing and shooting is the focus with stretching and physio exercises to keep the lads supple and free running. Last night in camp so an early turn in for the squad as "Uncle" John Ball beds them down. Early start in the morning to head for France.  Head coach Tony Larkin speaks to the BBC about the team, its chances, and a bit about Craig.

Wednesday 24th June - Official opening of the newly completed "Point 4" centre of excellence. The end of a £21 million development project to provide world class facilities for disabled sports men and women and in preparation for the 2010 Blind Football World Cup.   Lots of press in attendance and plenty of interviews for Craig. We can expect to see him on Sky News and ITV local news programmes talking about the football and also the forthcoming Armed Forces Day.  Normal training regime today though, and lots of target practice on the goals. Heavy duty massaging sessions being held after training now to keep muscles in top condition and let the physios sort out the minor knocks the lads are picking up daily. No major worries though so far!

Tuesday 23rd June - Fitness training begins at 10am with the physios and fitness staff. Afternoon sessions for ball skills, control, shooting and tactics. Craig settling into the formation and the left wing back position he'll be used in.   A tough day but top level football's not meant to be easy. We're going over there to win it! All in bed by 10:30 as usual :)

Monday 22nd June - Craig heads down to Hereford to join up with the squad as they begin preparation for France.  Fitness and skills training all afternoon with particular focus on new passing techniques as part of the master plan!  All the guys are located in shared accommodation to enable the team spirit to build.  All in bed for 10:30 under the watchful eye of coach John Ball.
