Medical Care
"We are eternally grateful to the
fantastic men and women of the U.S. military field hospital in Balad whose
battlefield medical skills have ensured that Craig lives to tell his story.
May they be blessed and protected and return home safely. They will always
have our eternal gratitude."
Steve, Debbie & Helen.

Initial first aid was
given to Craig by members of his section who evacuated him from the area
of the incident. This was immediately followed by further treatment
provided by the Regimental Medical Officer (RMO) who was in the area.
Following this treatment the RMO arranged for his evacuation back to the
British Military Hospital in Basra Air Station where the team there took
a decision, based on the extent of the injuries, to air lift him to the
American Field Hospital in Balad, south of Bagdad. In Balad, Craig spent
12 hours in surgery and remained on a ventilator throughout his
subsequent evacuation from Iraq to the American Trauma Hospital at
Ramstein Airbase in south west Germany.
The work of the
American surgical team in Ramstein stabilised Craig sufficiently to
enable his transfer via an RAF Aero-Med Hercules C130 aircraft which
delivered him safely to Birmingham's Selly Oak hospital on 27th March
where he entered the critical care ward, later to be transfered to a
side room on ward S4 on 28th. Craig remained in the
care of Major Chis Birkby, Royal Army Medical Corps, and her team on
ward S4 until embarking on sick leave 3rd May.
