What Happened?
At approximately 10pm on 22nd
March 2007, Lance Corporal Craig "Freddie" Lundberg and his colleagues
were involved in a battle with insurgents in Basra, Iraq. They had been
tasked with an operation to arrest certain known insurgent terrorist
characters who were causing major security concerns to the local community.
Following the arrest of his target, Craig's
neighbouring section came under fire from housing opposite whilst
they were trying to exact their arrest. In order
to offer them protection, Craig took his section
on to the roof of the building in an attempt to draw the fire from the other
section and subdue the enemy. During this extremely intense fire fight,
whilst in the cover of a small boundary wall and returning fire, Craig was
targeted by a rocket propelled grenade which blew
away the wall he was behind. This was immediately followed by another which
hit him in the upper left chest of his body armour.

The resulting impact and
explosion inflicted serious
"open" damage to Craig's left arm ,
the loss of his left eye and serious burns
and shrapnel wounds to the face. His right eye was
also seriously damaged by the explosion, leaving him
blind.
